According to the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens 2019 (Immigration Law), a passport is a document owned by the State, issued by a competent authority of Vietnam for Vietnamese citizens to use for exit, entry, and to prove nationality and identity.
1. WHAT IS A PASSPORT?
The passport contains complete basic information, including: portrait photo; surname, middle name and first name; date of birth; gender; nationality; symbol, entry and exit document number; date of issue, issuing agency; expiry date; personal identification number or identity card number; position, title for diplomatic passports, official passports in accordance with foreign affairs requirements. The language in the passport includes both Vietnamese and English.
2. WHAT IS AN ELECTRONIC CHIP PASSPORT?
A passport with an electronic chip is a passport with an electronic device that stores the encrypted information of the passport holder and the signature of the issuer. This is a new innovation to facilitate Vietnamese citizens, improve the efficiency of State management of immigration and meet the country's international integration requirements.
In addition, the chip also stores biometric characteristics, photos and personal information of citizens on the passport. This helps to simplify the procedure of implementing documents, and database management is easier for both competent authorities and people in need.
What are the outstanding advantages of electronic chip passports?
- Electronic passports not only store information written on paper such as: full name, date of birth, nationality... but also have the ability to store human biometric information such as fingerprints, irises, faces, blood types... Because they can store a lot of passenger information accurately and in a unified format, immigration procedures in countries will be faster and easier, almost no time is wasted for immigration control officers of countries to control and verify information on the passport because everything will appear quickly when reading the passport.
- People who are issued passports with electronic chips will be given priority by foreign countries when considering granting entry visas. Currently, there are over 100 countries and territories in the world using electronic passports, because they store a lot of information in a unified format between countries.
- Electronic chip passports have high information security, because they are stored in the chip, making it difficult to copy information. Therefore, electronic passports are more secure than regular paper passports, protecting passport holders from the risk of having their personal information stolen; avoiding counterfeiting.
- Issuing electronic passports not only facilitates people in immigration activities but is also consistent with e-Government, creating a breakthrough in socio-economic development; enhancing the position of Vietnamese passports, promoting Vietnam's integration process in the region and the world.
3. TYPES OF PASSPORTS
There are currently 3 types of passports in Vietnam:
- Ordinary passport (green passport): The most popular type today, issued to most Vietnamese citizens for purposes such as tourism, studying abroad, working...;
- Official passport (jade green): Issued to subjects belonging to state administrative agencies to perform assigned tasks;
- Diplomatic passport (red passport): Issued to high-ranking officials such as Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries, Provincial Chairmen... when working abroad.
4. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONLINE PASSPORT APPLICATION
- Passport application form;
- Take 2 4 x 6 photos with white background, do not cover forehead and ears
- Take photos of front and back of ID card
- Provide owner's phone number
- Passport loss report (in case of lost passport);
- Temporary residence book (for individuals who do not have ID card and submit application at temporary residence);
- Copy of birth certificate or birth certificate extract (for children under 14 years old);
- Old passport (in case of second application);
